The progress continuing Education Center was instituted in 1995 in form of Extra Mural studies by a group of seasoned and experienced WAEC examiners organized and coordinated by Mr. Godwin Idoko, a graduate of Biology Education with the Benue state teaching services board and WAEC Examiner of cognate experience. The need to start the center arose from pathetic condition of adults above school age and educationally disadvantaged children who were not able to participate in the formal school system and also the abysmal performance observed among WAEC and NECO candidates in the state.
The coordinator and Director of the center observed with utmost dismay the inadequacies of the formal school system such as poor coverage of syllabus, truancy among students and teachers, incessant strike action by teachers due to irregular payment of salaries, poor knowledge of examination requirements demanded by the WAEC marking scheme and high poverty level among parent leading to their inability to pay school fees of their children.
All these put together were largely responsible for the high illiteracy level of the people and the poor performance of the secondary school students in their SSCE and JAMB in the state. To alleviate the suffering of the people in this direction, the progress continuing Education programme was designed.
The center started with a population of about 30 students at Padopads Secondary School Makurdi with Evening session only. Today the center has been fully established at IBB square with morning, afternoon and evening sessions to meet the demands of learners in the state
The Internal reward system of the center has motivated the students of the center to work harder to earn better results. For instance the center has instituted Awards for candidates who obtain at least five credits including English Language and Mathematics. The center also place Award in a very colourful manner for JAMB candidates of the center who score up to 240 marks and above.
